Philmont Happenings

We’ve been busy, as usual…  I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m still recovering from our fund raising efforts over the weekend.  How about Mr. Sharkey collecting $190.00 from our aluminum recycling project???  Not bad for crushing a few cans!  I see some cool crew T-shirts in our future.  Seriously, this money will help offset the cost of our shakedown trips.

Our next fund raiser has the potential to be a big one, if everyone gets out there and sells tickets.  Keep up the good work!

Calling all those who get lost in the woods (Mr. Sharkey…), mark April 29th and May 13th on your calendars!  MAJ Trunzo from the Delaware National Guard will be conducting Land Navigation Training for our crews.  Just in time, too, since our first shakedown will be at Wharton State Forest in May.

Finally, don’t forget that this weekend is Eastern Mountain Sports “Club Sale”.  Might be a good time to stock up on some gear…

That’s all for now….

Spent last night with Lt.Col. Trunzo and our first session on traversing the wild with only a map, compass and bear knife in hand (we actually did not get training on the bear knife)

WOW! This presentaion was well paced, great visuals and really interesting. Even the boys lookend engaged 99.5% of the time.

I’ll admit, I went in with a fair amount of knowledge, and understood the information presented, but the stuff that I didn’t know will definately stick. The Lt.Col. has a way of presenting the inforamation in an interesting and simple to remember format.

Can’t wait for the next class and especially to put the knowledge to the test out in the field!

Great skills to have – especially when there isn’t a gas station to go and ask direction from near by (or drive past and ignor while saying – I know where I am stop bugging me – and NO – that is NOT – the same phone booth we’ve driven past 11 times)
