2008 – Summer Camp Experience – Day 3
OK – I’m tired. Here it is 23 hours since my last post and another day gone by (at least almost – there is still the troop swim at 10pm) For a select few of the boys this will also be an economical use of water because it will also double as a shower. Don’t wory mom’s, there is enough chlorine in the pool to kill EVERYTHING!!!!
My favorite qoute of the day came from a young cremudgon that was scaling the rock wall after dinner, working on his merit badge. He looked directly at his Scoutmaster and with excitement in his eyes said,” Mr McCann, would it be ok with you if I go and get a shower? I really stink!” A real Hallmark moment here at Camp Henson.
The day started with a nice brisk dip in the pool at 6:00am. The boys loved the fact that they were about to earn another Frigid Frog award (kinda like polar bear swim without having to chainsaw your way through the ice.)
It was real fun for me this morning before having any coffee, playing hide and seek with some of the boys that really didn’t want to participate in this awe inspiring moment of camp life. I, of course, would love to give you more details, but I had to stay back at the camp and, ahem, prepare breakfast or something. (Lucky for me I do not have to answer to my own excuses! I would never put up with such a poor excuse!
)
The younger guys had another great day – one downer was the 30 minutes of no pool time when they cleared out because of hearing thunder. This dude had some awsome hearing becuase I think he heard it comming from New Jersey. From my chair the sky was clear and sunny, but who am I to question? I’m old and really can’t hear what I used to.
Dinner was Fantastic – I haven’t wrote anything about or meals yet, but our cooks cannot be beat! We are the only troop that cooks for themselves, at least that I know of. We even had to limit the number of staff guests because we are getting so popular! Our Roasted Turkey dinner with all of the trimmings had even the most picky of eaters comming back for seconds! Even my own son ate more than just corn and rolls (ahhhh Fatherly pride, what a gift – keeps us from eating our young)
anywho – we had some heavy cloud cover and thunder before dinner – but still no rain. The temerature drop was much needed, even if it was short. All here are well and the cries for home have been at a real minimum and haven’t lasted for any long amount of time. Truth is we have been soooo busy that they are exausted when they hit their racks and sleep pretty soundly.
You may not recognize the look of accomplishment in your boys eyes when you pick them up in a few days – but look for it, they’ve earned it this week. Besides, it won’t be long before they are back on the couch complaining because the 18 straight hours of electronics wasn’t enough and it’s not their fault that you hadn’t caught them until then.
Think cooler thoughts for us – there is a good chance of HOT tomorrow.
See you on the trail!

Thanks for keeping us in touch with the boys. How are the older boys doing? It must be HOT there as you said. Tell Matt I said hello. Few more days and they will be home. YEA! Have fun and try to stay cool. I will read about what you will do tomorrow.
